Overview
Princebuild was appointed to deliver a three-week refresh of the Asda store at Chelmer Village Centre in Chelmsford. The project focused on enhancing both the external appearance and internal customer environment, giving the store a fresh, modern look while ensuring it remained fully operational throughout the programme.
As Princebuild’s first project for Asda, the successful delivery demonstrated the team’s ability to work within a live retail environment, carefully planning works to minimise disruption to customers, staff and neighbouring residents.
Scope of Work
The refurbishment included a range of internal and external improvements designed to revitalise the store and improve the overall customer experience. Key elements of the project included:
- Refresh of the external signage and store entrance fascia.
- Replacement of 52 timber pillars within the main shopping centre walkway, upgrading them with new timber posts featuring protective steel cladding to improve durability.
- Removal and replacement of a display freezer, temporary display wall and redundant hot food counter, creating space for new retail shelving.
- Refurbishment of the Click and Collect area.
- Refresh of the petrol filling station.
- White lining works within the customer car park.
- Internal redecoration of the retail area, entrance and staff corridor.
- Refurbishment of the trolley bays, including the installation of new Asda branded vinyl graphics.
With the store remaining open throughout the works, the majority of activities were carried out overnight to minimise disruption to customers. The store’s location within Chelmer Village Centre, surrounded by residential properties, required careful management of noise, with the team implementing measures to reduce the impact on the local community while maintaining programme.
