Overview
The Pearson Square project combined two major schemes delivered simultaneously on one large site a full upgrade of the public realm and the extension of the Pearson Store shopfront. With two separate clients and design teams, the works demanded exceptional coordination, robust health and safety procedures and careful management of contractors to maintain quality and minimise disruption in a live retail environment.
Scope of Work
Public Realm – Pearson Square
The public realm transformation created a more welcoming and sustainable environment. Works included installation of permeable drainage systems to manage surface water sustainably, complete replacement of paving, and the addition of new planters and a modern lighting scheme. A new incoming supply and power infrastructure was installed to future-proof the square. The team worked around unmapped existing services and adapted to the discovery of a robust concrete slab beneath the original paving reusing it where possible but reducing its thickness to achieve the new levels.
Shopfront Extension – Pearson Store
The Pearson Store extension expanded the retail frontage into the square to attract high-end beauty brands and provide premium retail space. Works included service diversions, construction of the new shopfront with two automatic doors, and installation of granite stall risers and stone columns. Unexpected ground conditions and drainage runs were managed while maintaining safe access to the live store throughout.
Management & Coordination
Delivering two projects for separate clients placed additional pressure on health and safety systems and subcontractor management. The site team worked closely with both clients, multiple design teams, structural engineers, architects and project managers to align expectations, maintain clear boundaries between contracts and implement a well-thought-out phasing plan so the centre and neighbouring stores could continue trading safely.
Summary
Despite its complexity, the project delivered two highly successful outcomes. Pearson Square now offers a striking public space that draws people into the centre and provides a communal area to sit and enjoy. The Pearson Store has gained a valuable new shopfront extension, creating premium space for high-value brands.
All stakeholders, site team, client representatives and centre management collaborated to achieve a finish that mirrors the architect’s vision. The phased approach ensured minimal disruption to the live environment, and the final result exceeded expectations, leaving the centre a more desirable destination for shoppers and brands alike.
