Overview
Princebuild was appointed by UCL to deliver a comprehensive accessibility and student experience upgrade at Mill Hill Observatory. The project aimed to significantly improve accessibility across the site for visitors and students, while enhancing the overall learning environment. Works were carefully coordinated to ensure minimal disruption to the facility.
Scope of Work
The project included a range of upgrades both externally and internally:
- Complete design and installation of new external pathways, ramps, handrails, and an entrance gate.
- Formation of a new universal WC, replacing the previous divided male and female facilities, along with refurbishment and accessibility enhancements to the single accessible WC.
- Creation of larger door openings and supply of new door sets across the site.
- Dextra lighting upgrades to improve visibility and safety.
- AV and data system upgrades to enhance student experience.
- External and internal decorations across the campus.
- Additional accessibility and visual upgrades, inclusive of the following:-
- Timber handrails installed to internal staircases.
- Contrasting stair nosing’s.
- Door frame decorations to ensure contrast with doors for improved accessibility.
Summary
The scheme successfully achieved its primary goal of significantly improving accessibility for all visitors and students, both externally and internally. In addition, upgrades to lighting, AV systems, and internal decor have enhanced the overall student experience at Mill Hill Observatory. Princebuild delivered the works on time and within budget, ensuring a modern, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all users.
