Overview
Princebuild was appointed by Waitrose & Partners to deliver the complete refurbishment of its Pimlico store in Central London. The five-week fast-track project involved a full internal refit alongside the replacement of the store’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and refrigeration.
Working within a tight programme during the store’s closure, our team successfully completed the refurbishment in time for practical completion, allowing the store to reopen as planned.
Scope of Work
The refurbishment transformed both the customer and staff environments, delivering a modern, energy-efficient retail space. Works included:
- Complete internal refurbishment and redecoration throughout the store.
- Installation of new HVAC systems to improve heating, ventilation and air conditioning performance.
- Replacement of the existing refrigeration systems with a modern CO₂ refrigeration system, providing a more environmentally sustainable solution.
- Installation of new energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the store.
- Refurbishment and enhancement of staff welfare areas.
- Installation of new flooring throughout the store by our in-house flooring specialists, Princeinteriors, ensuring a high-quality finish and seamless coordination with the wider refurbishment programme.
- Coordination of all works within a live city environment while maintaining a strict programme.
Delivering the project in Central London presented several logistical challenges. Residential restrictions prevented 24-hour working, requiring careful planning to maintain the programme. Additional local authority constraints, limited parking and the inability to position a skip on site meant waste management had to be carefully coordinated through twice-daily collections within a busy and confined location.
Despite these challenges, the project team maintained excellent communication with the client, suppliers and local stakeholders to ensure works progressed safely and efficiently.
The project also incorporated several sustainability improvements, including the installation of an energy-efficient CO₂ refrigeration system and LED lighting, helping to reduce energy consumption while supporting Waitrose & Partners’ environmental objectives.

The Pimlico store reopened on schedule with a refreshed retail environment, upgraded staff facilities, new flooring installed by our Princeinteriors team, and modern, energy-efficient building services. The successful delivery ensured minimal disruption to the client’s reopening plans and provided local residents with a modernised Waitrose store ready to welcome customers once again.
