Princebuild is celebrating 10 years of partnership working with Boston College — helping students to gain work-based learning opportunities, apprenticeships and employment within the construction industry.

In conjunction with Boston College we provide work-based learning and career mentoring for its electrical students. Work experience is required for students to gain full accreditation for their course. This is supported via placements completed on our electrical contracts throughout Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire.

Brian Harper from Boston College said: “The collaboration between Boston College and Princebuild has been extremely beneficial over the years, for both learners and apprentices alike.

“Learners have been given access to real-life experiences within the electrical industry that they would otherwise find difficult to replicate within a college environment. Many learners have gained an apprenticeship with Princebuild, which has always led to full time employment at the end of their training.”

Princebuild’s electrical apprentices attend Boston College one day a week where they bring together their work experiences and link them with the college’s theory and practical teaching.

Laura Pell, Building Services Engineer and qualified Electrical Supervisor, who gained an apprenticeship through Boston College, said: “My apprenticeship has given me the training and skills I need to get a well-paid, fulfilling and interesting job.”

We also host skills roadshows with Boston College at secondary schools across Lincolnshire. These events promote women in construction roles and offer ‘have a go’ activities in electrical, motor vehicle repair, carpentry, engineering and plumbing.

Barbara Mehew is Company Human Resource Manager for Princebuild and the newly-elected Chairperson for South Lincolnshire Group Training Association, which promotes strong links between the construction industry and schools and colleges.

She said: “We are proud to work in partnership with Boston College and by doing so we have created many success stories.

“As an Investors in People accredited company since 2005, our efforts in maintaining this and to continually up-skill and multi-skill our employees while ensuring that we have a happy workforce that we retain, is testament to our commitment to invest in our people.”
