The have-a-go event organised by South Lincolnshire Group Training Association (SLGTA), and held by New College Stamford at their Borderville Sports Centre, Stamford,  gave hundreds of local school pupils the chance to try their hands at a range of construction trades.

Princebuild sponsored the event by providing 50 engraved medals and four trophies for the best pupil from each of the activities, school and best teacher on each of the two days.

Peeby, the Princebuild mascot, was also in attendance on day one to help the primary school pupils with the activities and present the awards at the end of the day.

The event is designed to inspire new entrants to the construction industry and has become an annual fixture in the local schools diaries, enjoyed by students and teachers alike. More than 250 primary school children and 160 teenagers from five different local authority areas took part in activities ranging from plumbing and electrics to creating a cable stay bridge.

As part of the activities, Princeenergy delivered four sessions on day one, giving students an insight into renewable technologies. The sessions included a short class room presentation before the youngsters got to go outside to see first-hand how solar panels work with the help of some demonstration panels.

Barbara Mehew, Company HR Manager for Princebuild and Chairman of the SLGTA, attended the event on both days and was very pleased with how the pupils involved themselves in the activities. “The buzz of enthusiasm from the staff and students across the venue was amazing. It was a delight to see so many young people getting involved in such a range of activities and of course it is much appreciated that so many local employers give up their time to support these events.

“Over the next five years it is anticipated that there will be a need for over 220,000 new entrants into the construction industry across the UK, and events like this are vital for the future of the industry.”

The SLGTA work closely with local schools and colleges giving students the opportunity to learn more about careers in construction. You can find out more about the SLGTA and their work here.
