Extension of Primrose unit oncology ward

Project: Extension of Primrose unit oncology ward
Value: £440,000
Duration: 16 weeks
Client: Bedford Hospital NHS Trust
Completed: September 2016
Following on from previously completed projects at the hospital, Princebuild were successful in securing the work to extend and refurbish the Primrose Ward oncology unit.

The unit which opened in 2003 provides a full complement of high quality clinical and support services. Demand for these services has increased by 85% over the last five years and the unit’s capacity has been stretched to the limit.

Princebuild began work on site in May 2016 with the first challenge being to set up a temporary facility to allow the oncology unit to continue functioning for the duration of works. An external unit within the hospital ground was re-decorated and fitted out with washrooms, bed bays and all other clinical requirements so that services could relocate to the new area, minimising any disruption.

With staff and patients relocated to the temporary ward, work began on extending the primrose ward and making the necessary internal alterations to accommodate the four additional chemotherapy treatment stations and the new access corridor to the pharmacy department.
The ward area was opened up to create an open plan feel and half height partitions were created to maintain a sense of privacy for the patients receiving treatment. To add light to the ward three french doors were installed opening onto the adjoining courtyard helping to bring natural light into the new area. The colours used were based on colours from a beach, with mellow blues and yellows and wood effect flooring, which was all chosen by the charity to help create a light and tranquil space.

As this project was charity funded we were set the task of making as many cost savings as possible, whilst still delivering a high quality project. We were able to bring the project in £45k under the original budget by value engineering areas of the design, which was a significant achievement considering the scope of works delivered.

The new extension has changed the department dramatically with a bespoke reception desk designed and installed creating a focal point and along with the new doors, ceilings, flooring and medical gas panels, a welcoming and pleasant environment for the patients has been created for them to receive their treatment in.

The new extension was officially opened on 20th October by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire.
