Fresh Look upgrade Retford store

Project: Fresh Look upgrade Retford store
Value: £2,800,000
Duration: 18 weeks
Client: Morrisons
Completed: November 2020
Retford Morrisons was built in the late 1990’s and last had a minor refurbishment in early 2000, so the store was overdue an update, not just in appearance but also in terms of technology and logistics.

Princebuild were given the task of implementing a full store refresh, applying the Morrisons ‘Fresh Look’ scheme throughout whilst maximising floor space to allow for additional product lines.

This required a full redecoration and reconfiguration, with new equipment being installed to enable the store to be more efficient, as well as allowing for additional offerings to be included within the store such as a Barista bar and party shop. The existing tobacco kiosk had a storage area consisting of a 10m x 5m high concrete bunker wall that needed to be removed, working in a confined space with large breaking equipment was a particular challenge but was managed carefully with a safe and successful outcome.

Upgrades were made to internal systems such as the fire alarm, energy saving LED lighting was installed throughout and the refrigeration units were also upgraded to more efficient models. Both customer and staff toilets were fully refurbished, as well as the canteen and common areas.
Externally the petrol filling station received a redecoration to bring it in line with the fresh look branding and a new home shopping pod was built to enable the store to keep up with the demand in home deliveries. The home shopping pod did present some issues with underground pipes being in the way of a pad foundation, despite some damage to a water pipe the issues were overcome and did not impact on the overall timeline of the project.

Another external issue was the required upgrades to the existing grease trap which was located in the customer car park. The store was operational throughout the work so traffic and pedestrians had to be re-routed whilst the work was undertaken. Safety of the public was ensured by employing two banksmen and the use of diversion signage until the work was complete.

Completing the external was the installation of acoustic fencing which was installed to reduce noise pollution to the surrounding houses and buildings.

The project has reinvented the Retford store which has a fresh and bright look and feel to it. In addition to the much improved appearance, the store is also more efficient, its carbon footprint has been reduced and both staff and customers have a more enjoyable experience whilst in store.

Despite the need to overcome several unforeseen issues throughout the works, the project was delivered on budget and to programme.
