Princebuild have many years of experience working within live hospitals and are accustomed to the sensitive and flexible approach required in such environments. We applied this experience to the refurbishment project at the NHS run Lister Hospital in Stevenage and completed the refurbishment of a live ward on time and on budget.
The refurbishment of the gynaecology ward, ward 7A, required the creation of five new wet rooms plus the replacement of all ceilings, laying of new flooring and a full redecoration throughout.
The creation of the new wet rooms allowed the ward to increase its capacity and reduce patient waiting times. Trovex Hygipod systems were used in the wet room areas, these modular units are very hygienic, offering complete cleanliness, with no horizontal or vertical joints. They are quick and easy to install and come in a range of modern, bright colours complimenting the new décor of the refurbished ward.
The refurbished ward is now a light, airy and welcoming space for patients
Whilst most of the work was completed with the ward open, a one week closure was required three weeks into the project to allow the drainage for the new wet rooms to be connected. Complications with what was already a tight schedule hindered the project due to the breakout of a sickness bug at the hospital, meaning we were unable to complete the drainage until the sixth week of the project. This caused significant problems for the rest of the scheduled works, however by re-working the programme and introducing additional hours the delivery of the project was only affected by two days.
The refurbished ward is now a light, airy and welcoming space for patients and the hospital is able to treat more patients, reducing waiting times for appointments.
