After the successful completion of several projects at The Queensgate Shopping Centre, working alongside the Rolton Group, Princebuild were successful in tendering for the refurbishment works of the Westgate Arcade.
The arcade was Peterborough’s first indoor shopping precinct built back in the 1930’s and now houses many independent retailers such as jewellers, hair dressers and butchers’ shops.
The challenge was to bring the arcade more in line with the modern feel of the main Queensgate Shopping centre, whilst retaining its original character.
The works were carried out in a live environment which was open to the public for most of the time. Special attention had to be paid to all aspects of health and safety, ensuring all Risk Assessments and Methods Statements were safely implemented for every single phase of the work. Out of hours working was required to enable the majority of works to take place, and special care taken to ensure all of the retailers within the arcade could continue to trade throughout the works.

The arcade received a full redecoration, with the application of a contemporary grey colour scheme. New floor tiling complemented the new paintwork and original features such as the mosaic tiled doorways were replicated at each store front to maintain a uniform look throughout the arcade. Low energy LED lighting was installed throughout, enhancing the bright airy feel of the arcade and also helping to keep running and maintenance costs to a minimum.
Particular emphasis was made to keeping all of the retailers informed of the progress of the works and Princebuild worked with the Queensgate Centre to produce newsletters throughout the project to assist with the regular communication needed to make the project a success.
The final stage was to install new signage to each of the units and this completed the smart, stylish appearance of the arcade, giving it a consistent look and feel throughout.
