Demolition of existing and build of new Little Clacton store

Project: Demolition of existing and build of new Little Clacton store
Value: £14,500,000
Duration: 52 weeks
Client: Morrisons
Completed: July 2022
The Little Clacton store was originally built in the early 90's, operating first as a Safeway store and later being brought under the Morrisons brand.

A maturing belt of nearby trees was causing major structural issues to the building and the decision was made to demolish the store and take the opportunity to build a new energy efficient store in its place.

Having worked with Morrisons for over 25 years Princebuild were delighted to be awarded the project, the largest to be undertaken for the retailer to date and the first new build store Princebuild have built for Morrisons.

A temporary store was erected on the site to continue to provide for customers and once that was up and running the demolition and redevelopment of the site got underway.

Princebuild undertook all works from the installation of 470 piles for the foundations, to the external cladding and the internal fit out.

The project was as rewarding as it was challenging but the store was successfully handed over on time for the grand opening in July.

An altered site layout allowed for better placement of the new store within the site, maximising the space and providing a better flow for customers and deliveries.
The new store is the first of Morrisons lower environmental impact stores. It uses 43% less carbon, stocks 366 loose products and is almost zero waste. It has four times the amount of locally sourced products and has also incorporated biodiversity schemes and community hours.

In addition, through its careful demolition 99% of the demolition materials from the old store were diverted from landfill, we also reduced the steel used in the construction of the floor slab by using steel fibres inlieu of traditional reinforcement to lower carbon emissions by 52%.

Part of the carbon reduction is achieved by the large solar array on the store’s roof, this provides nearly 20% of its energy and was installed by our own building services division Princeenergy.
