Extension and improvements to store and petrol filling station, Chingford

Project: Extension and improvements to store and petrol filling station, Chingford
Value: £4,125,000
Duration: 26 weeks
Client: Wm Morrison Supermarkets
Completed: January 2017
As part of a drive to improve customers’ shopping experience, Morrisons have been upgrading their supermarkets, with the aim of completing their entire estate by the end of 2018. The Chingford store not only received a ‘Fresh Look’ redesign but also a full refurbishment, including extensions to the café, the petrol filling station and to the main store.

The works required were extensive and the time frame for the project was extremely tight, with only 26 weeks given for works which would normally take 34 weeks to complete.

The main reason for the accelerated programme came from the looming Christmas retail period with the work to the main store needing to be complete by December 2nd. To achieve the very tight schedule we had teams on site 24/7 throughout the project, this along with careful planning allowed us to complete the works on time.

Structural works included the construction of extensions to both the shop floor space incorporating new customer toilets and the café, as well as the creation of a new entrance lobby. Temporary toilet and entrance facilities were put in place to allow customers to continue using the store whilst works took place. As the café was closed for a short period of time during the works, a new Barista bar was installed and opened early so that customers could still get hot drinks.

"Just wanted to thank you and your team for doing a great job in transforming the (Chingford) store.

"I know it had it's challenges and was not a easy project to take on while the store was trading but the end result was well worth it.

"Many thanks for all your team's effort." Lloyd Bamford, Property Manager - Head of Store Formats, Wm Morrison Supermarkets

All other areas of the store remained open throughout the works including all of the market street facilities such as the fish mongers and butchers. To accommodate this we had to adapt our working methods at the detriment of our own efficiencies.

The store itself received a full re-fit with new ceilings, lighting and skylights being installed. Both the main store and back of house received a full redecoration and new areas were created in the store in-line with the new Morrisons Fresh Look branding. This included a party zone, Nutmeg clothing and a pizza counter and required layout changes to accommodate the new features.

Externally the ageing atrium and walkway were demolished and a new look applied to the exterior in-line with new Morrisons branding. Works were carried out to improve the car parks and new ATM pods were constructed. The petrol station was extended and re-fitted to enable a much wider range of groceries and frozen foods.

The store was handed over on schedule and in time for the pre-Christmas rush, which resulted in a very successful trading period with footfall and takings up on the same period from the previous year.
